Jean Mathisen Haugen sent us the news of the passing of Leola Reschke at the age of 108 on November 25, 2016 in Lander, Wyoming.
Leola Reschke was my mother’s roommate at the nursing home here. Her maiden name was Dollard and they were a very old time family here.Leola learned to ride horseback before she could walk. Her father, Charlie Dollard was a wild horse runner on the Red Desert and Beaver Rim country with my great uncle Charlie Van Patten around 100 years ago. Leola lost both of her husbands and had outlived all of her children (2 sons and a daughter), but had grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. For her 108th birthday on July 23, she rode in a 1928 restored car up to see Old Faithful in Yellowstone; for her 100th and 105th birthdays she got back on a horse. She was a remarkable lady and was pretty sharp until she passed. We lost some great history with Leola’s passing here at Lander.
In 2013, Jean shared pictures and a story in Picture the West, telling of Leola Reschke’s birthday wish to ride a horse again on her 105th birthday. Jean’s photograph from the event is above.
